  • Plan to endow an Alu…
"The annual banquet and reunion of the Alumni of the Collegiate and Engineering departments, was held on the evening of the 22nd, at Kuhn’s Café. The festivities were preceded by a short business meeting, at which the most important matter considered was the proposed plan for raising the necessary funds for the endowment of the Alumni Chair of Greek, on what is known as the Building and Loan plan. The plan is a popular one and seems to offer the best means of securing the necessary fund. By it, each alumnus is asked to take one or more shares, or half shares, or Loan Association stock, which will mature in say five years, at the expiration of which time the permanent endowment fund will be accrued. In the meantime, the Loan Association allows a withdrawal per month of the professor’s salary. The plan was adopted, and the Committee on Alumni Chair of Greek was instructed to take steps to put it into operation."

This was done, and the alumni pledged $1 million for the new building, the pledges to cover a five-year period. A pledge to the Cathedral of Learning Fund carried with it membership in the General Alumni Association and immunity from further solicitation for five years.
