Cathedral Innovation Voting

In celebration of the 80th anniversary of the dedication of the Cathedral of Learning in 1937, and in recognition to Pitt’s outstanding commitment to innovation, the Pitt Alumni Association invited Pitt alumni, students, faculty, and staff to take the Cathedral Innovation Challenge and build, draw, or create replicas of the Cathedral of Learning.

It wasn't easy, but we have selected several finalists who brought a remarkable level of creativity, skill, and innovation to their Cathedral of Learning creations. These entries can be viewed below. To view our honorable mention entries, click here.

Cathedral Chess Set

Brad Cline

"I created a Pittsburgh themed chess set called Steel City Chess. I used the Cathedral of Learning as a bishop in the set. It is my personal favorite piece in the set. The Steel City Chess Cathedral of Learning is three and a half inches tall and made out of polystone. There are black and gold versions of it for both sides of the chess board (traditional Pittsburgh city colors!)."

Doodle Watercolor Cathedral

Teadora Gildengers

"I made a watercolor drawing of the Cathedral of Learning and then had all of the students in the middle school doodle on it. They drew different images of what the Cathedral means to them all over the building. That way the building is made of the ideas and connections that students at the Fanny Edel Falk Laboratory School make to it."

Quilt

Cathedral Quilt

Gail Nixon Rowles

"A 14x18 inch textile from many fabric bits gathered over the years, sewn together to make one of my favorite buildings. Western Pennslyvania has a huge quilting tradition so it seemed fitting to make one for this. The madras strip on the back is from a dress I got for my Lantern Night in 1964. I missed that event (I had to work) but now it gets a larger life."

Castle

Cardboard Castle Cathedral

Christina Wolfe

"My Cathedral of Learning is simple but poetic. It's a cardboard castle that you can open up on 2 corners to walk into. Its concentration is on the Nationality Rooms.
