Pitt Alumni Association Awards Information

Distinguished Alumni Fellow Award

The Distinguished Alumni Fellow award was established to honor outstanding alumni (either degreed or non-degreed)* of the University of Pittsburgh. Candidates are evaluated on the basis of:

  • Outstanding level of professional achievement (emphasis on candidates with national and/or international prominence)
  • Service to the community
  • Attendance at the annual Honors Convocation ceremony

The recipients of this award are announced and presented in February during the Honors Convocation.


Bill Baierl Distinguished Alumni Service Award

This award was established to recognize volunteer service of an alumnus to both the University and his/her community. Criteria for selection is as follows:

  • All candidates must be *degreed or non-degreed alumni
  • The receipient's level of longstanding service to the University, and outstanding level of service and committment to their community

This award is presented during the annual Spring board meeting and awards luncheon.

Note: The deadline for submission is April 3, 2009.

Volunteer Excellence Award (Volunteer of the Year Award)

Better known as the Volunteer of the Year award, this award has been established to recognize and honor individuals who have enriched the life of the University of Pittsburgh through their volunteer efforts. Criteria for selection is as follows:

  • Only degree holding alumni will be considered
  • The volunteer activity must be without pay
  • The volunteer activity must be perceived as a benefit to the University of Pittsburgh and the Pitt Alumni Association.

This award is presented during the annual Spring board meeting and awards luncheon.

Ivan and Mary Novick Award for Young Alumni Leadership

Established to recognize younger Alumni members for their outstanding contributions and volunteerism on behalf of the association. Criteria for selection is as follows:

  • Only degree holding alumni will be considered
  • The volunteer activity must be without pay
  • The volunteer activity must be perceived as a benefit to the University of Pittsburgh and the Pitt Alumni Association.

This award is presented during the annual Spring board meeting and awards luncheon.

Pitt Alumni Recruitment Volunteer of the Year Award

The PART Volunteer of the Year award is given to an outstanding individual who supports the University of Pittsburgh in their city by recruiting prospective students to attend Pitt. In addition they also assist the Oiffce of Admissions and Financial Aid with recruiting the very best and brightest students from their area.

This award is presented during the annual Spring board meeting and awards luncheon.


Alumni Legislative Network (ALN) Volunteer of the Year Award

The ALN Volunteer Award is given to an individual who helps to promote the cause of higher education at the state level. The winner of this award also participates in the Pitt Day in Harrisburg each year.

This award is presented during the annual Spring board meeting and awards luncheon.


Pitt Career Network (PCN) Volunteer of the Year Award

This award is given to a deserving alumni for outstanding service and volunteering to mentor students and fellow alumni as they prepare to enter the world of business or change careers.


Banner Awards

  • Established to provide a comprehensive framework of activities/programs that support the strategic directions of the Pitt Alumni Association.
  • Eligibility is limited to Pitt Clubs, Area Representatives, Affinity Councils and Alumni Societies.
  • Awards are made to constituent groups who demonstrate participation in four of the following eight areas;
    • Alumni Advocacy
    • Communication
    • Fundraising
    • Membership
    • Partnerships
    • Pitt Alumni Recruitment Team
    • Programs
    • Scholarships

This award is presented during the annual Winter board meeting and awards luncheon.


*Degreed Alumni are those who have graduated from the University. Non-degreed Alumni include individuals who have completed at least two semesters but have not completed a degree program, left the University in good standing, and who are not still classified as students.
